A Year Of Makeup Fails – The Products I Used This Year That Didn’t Work Out!

Like I mentioned in my yearly favourites post, I’ve tried A LOT of products this year. More so than ever before, and although I’ve found some firm favourites, I’ve also found some huge flops. Some surprising and others not so much, so lets just get into it shall we…

E.L.F. Camo CC Cream

This was so hyped, so advertised, and it sounded right up my street. However, I find it super drying, it picks up on dry patches even when I think I have my skincare game down. The colour is off too, and the shade range isn’t great so I couldn’t get a better match. If I remember rightly this was about £14 and I just feel for that price you could get something that performs much better.

Sleek Rose Gold Blush

This is just straight up glitter, there’s very little pigment for the actual colour but what does apply to the skin isn’t a shade that I particularly like on myself. The amount of glitter looks like a highlight, but it just doesn’t work on me. Maybe on a deeper skin as a pinkie gold highlighter, or even as an eyeshadow topper, but for a blush, I just cant get on board with it.

XX Revolution Cream Bronzer

I wrote a whole review on this bronzer after using it, and trying to get my head around how to apply it, for about two weeks. You can read that review here. I have since then purchased the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and it made applying it so much easier! Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a fail because the colour is still off, but the application is much easier with this brush! I also don’t think it lasts as well as the ELF Putty Bronzer on me.

L’Oreal Icoconic Glow Highlight Powder

There’s so many things I loved about this powder, its so soft and subtle on the skin. There’s not one bit of overpowering glitter, it is truly a lit from within glow. Until that is, you turn to the side. When the powder catches the light, its straight up pink! Like bright barbie pink, I’m not sure how it changes so drastically from being straight on to side on, but its so overpowering when the light catches it that I simply can not wear it. I’m not sure what skin tones could pull off such a bight highlighter, a blush topper maybe, but higher up on the cheek or elsewhere on the face is impossible.

Makeup Obsession Feelin’ Spicy Palette

I did a whole review on this palette which is linked here, I have continued to use this palette but simply to use it up. The formulas aren’t ground breaking, they don’t last very well through the day, but for an every day basic look for work I am trying to get through this palette.

Barry M Colour Glide Liquid Eyeshadow

As I come to writing this I can’t find it online, so I assume it’s been discontinued because its awful? Either way I got this earlier in the summer thinking it could work as a throw on and go eyeshadow stick, but unfortunately the colour pigment is practically non-existent and it clings onto dry patches. It also creases throughout the day like crazy and feels oily on the lid, a very strange combination of feelings.

L’Oreal Tatouage Signature Liner

Again, I can’t find this online with ‘Tatouage’ on the tube, so I’m guessing I ordered the Tattoo Liner (which is super highly rated online!) and I received this? I don’t know. This version however is frankly, awful. Its a dark grey, not black, but that’s if you can actually get any product out at all. Over eyeshadow it doesn’t work, any glitter or shimmer and the nib just crusts up and even after wiping it, its impossible to get any liquid out. If I do manage to get some product out onto my lash line it smudges and transfers like crazy and just doesn’t last at all! I was hoping this would be a good pick for my wedding, but it’s honestly the worst liquid liner I’ve ever tried.

Eyelure Brow Gel

It’s not that the actual gel is a problem, I’m sure it would be fine, but the spoolie brush is so humongous and the bristles are so spaced out, you cant get any product onto your brows! It makes a huge mess because you cant be precise with it, even a gentle hand and all your foundation and concealer comes off on the brush and just makes more work than it’s worth.

E.L.F. Illuminating Set and Spray

If you saw my yearly favourites post, you’ll know that ELF make the best setting spray and one that I will forever use, this one however can only be described as squirty. The spray is awful it leaves damp patches all over the face and removes powder products in places, another one that I’m trying to use up to get out my drawers but I actually really dislike using it.

Are any of these products your favourites or do you dislike them too? What’s the worst product you tried from last year that we all need to stay clear of?

  2. It sucks to have make up fails, especially if we’re hyped up about the product for some time before we buy it. However, trial and error is often a good way to find what really works for us on the long run. <3

  7. I remember that Sleek blush being big back in the day, but it doesn’t sound like a very nice formula at all! The L’Oreal highlighter sounds so strange too, I can’t imagine many people wanting a barbie pink stripe of highlighter haha xx
