Three Sustainable Swaps I’ve Implemented So Far This Year

This year, more than ever before, the sustainable market is absolutely booming. Brands are creating incredible products to help consumers make more conscious choices, and although the cost to our purse strings may be slightly raised, the cost to the planet is an important factor when making purchases.

There are so many sustainable choices on the market now, and although they’re better for the environment, trying them all isn’t really a viable option. Of course when making the decision to buy a new product the carbon footprint is a deciding factor, you also need to be confident in the product actually working well for your needs. I’m trying to slowly swap over to more eco conscious choices as and when I run out of things, rather than swapping everything all at once and becoming overwhelmed, so here are the thing I’ve swapped so far this year!

Wild Deodorant

I know this has been absolutely everywhere online, so many content creators doing paid adverts for them and don’t even get me started on the Instagram adverts. I mean, it clearly worked because here I am having spent my own money on it, but I got an advert to try three little sample tubes for just the cost of postage. After trying it for about six weeks, and completely finishing through my usual spray deodorant, I decided on purchasing this through the boots website.

Now, there two reasons why I wanted to order through Boots rather than the Wild website. Firstly, you know I needed this Aqua colour and it wasn’t available through them directly. Secondly, I didn’t want to subscribe to be sent refills every month I just wanted to purchase the holder, and buy the refills as and when I needed them.

Although I’m not an incredibly sweaty person, weird flex but its all I’ve got going for me, I’ve really enjoyed using this deodorant! Its been quite some time since I’ve used a stick product like this, always preferring a spray, but honestly the things I’ve heard about using aerosols on your under arms and the health risks that come with that was a real sticker for my choice to switch.

The scents aren’t overwhelming, I generally prefer a fruity or sweet smell but this dispenser came with Cotton And Sea Salt which is just a clean fresh soapy scent. I did prefer the Jasmine and Mandarin Blossom in the sample one I tried first, so that will more than likely be the refill I buy first.

Overall I’m really happy with this swap, I’ve not felt like I miss the aerosol one I was using previously, and it works perfectly fine for me and my body. Ask me again after a hot sweaty summer though, but I really cant see it being a problem for me!

Estrid Razor

Another one that is just everywhere online, and are you sensing a colour theme here? I just adore this shade of turquoise! When I first went vegan, my razor choice wasn’t something I ever considered, and all my beauty products aren’t vegan but I am trying to be a more conscious consumer so this brand just spoke to my soul. I also love all their branding and social media content, a hair removal company with such diversity at its heart is what we all need.

I signed up for the subscription from this service as you can completely tailor it to you, choosing how often you want to receive it and it’s so easy to swap and change or skip a shipment all online through your account.

The weight of the handle is a really unusual feeling, but it makes it feel like a luxury product that’s really sturdy. The heads are easy to change and the wall mount is so useful to stop the lubricating bars going gunky on the side of your bath, I hate that!

It gives a really smooth close shave, and leaves the skin feeling soft and hydrated. I have quite sensitive skin and I don’t find either the hydrating bars or the blades irritate my skin at all. It’s not reinventing the wheel, it’s a razor, but its a really nice one and knowing that this choice is plastic free is a small win for me. I would recommend if your in the market for plastic free hair removal, I’ve really enjoyed using it.

The Cheeky Panda Tissues

Again, not something I’d ever considered before, but as a hay fever sufferer and after recently getting a mammoth cold (not the Rona) my sister in law recommended these to me and I decided to pick them up. At £1.65 for four packs, they’re not as cheap as the bigger brands, but like I said previously, I’m willing to spend more in some areas to minimise the single use plastic in my everyday life.

These are bamboo tissues packed in cardboard boxes, the same size as a regular pocket sized packet but sturdier so they do take up slightly more room in your handbag but nothing dramatic. They’re really nice and soft on your skin, which is a huge issue for me as I have sensitive dry skin and as soon as I get a cold or runny nose the skin dries out even more and cracks which leads to even more soreness!

I feel these tissues, regardless of their plastic free nature, as really lovely to use. The softness is so welcome on my sensitive skin and I will absolutely continue to buy them. Of course they are more expensive, but they’re not an everyday purchase and I don’t use them at home opting to save them only for when I’m out and about. If, like me your a hay fever sufferer, these will be a welcome sustainable swap when the pollen rolls in!

Garnier Ultimate Blends Shampoo Bar

Just a quick note on this product before I sign off, as i haven’t actually given it a go yet but I wanted to mention it here as its all relevant! I picked up this Garnier shampoo bar from Superdrug whilst it was on offer last week, I’ve been using the Garnier Delicate Oat shampoo and conditioner for a few weeks, and although the packaging for that is recycled and recyclable, if I can swap to something completely plastic free that’s preferable. I will report back when I’ve tested this out fully!

Have you tried to swap any of your products out for more sustainable choices recently? What would you recommend and what other swaps should I try next? Let me know as I want to slowly swap over to minimise the amount of single use plastic making its way through my household!
